Nedbank Cape Town Marathon
TOTAL PRIZE PURSE : R564 700
The Cape Town Marathon starts in Adderley Street outside the Golden Acre, with the Houses of Parliament and St Georges Cathedral behind the runners. The runners pour downhill through the City, past the Artscape Theatre and Good Hope Centre and proceeding out towards the southern suburbs. Running past the Rondebosch Common and the Red Cross Childrens Hospital, the route goes between Pinelands and Langa before it turns back to the City. After returning to Adderley Street, the runners will pass the harbour and the V & A Waterfront, before proceeding past the Mouille Point lighthouse and Three Anchor Bay along the Promenade. Near the pavilion the runners turn and head back towards the City and finish in Darling Street between the Grand Parade and the City Hall Balcony, where former president Nelson Mandela gave his freedom speech on the evening of his release from jail on 11 February 1990. The course is one of the flattest to be found from the City Centre and has the potential to deliver a winning time of around 2 hours 10 minutes with the right field and weather conditions. It takes in several historical sites and Table Mountain is visible throughout the route, while the last 15km are amongst the most scenic to be found
