In 1998, Gray Braadvedt and Rudi Viljoen got together with a vision to host a Mountain bike event in mountains of Magoebaskloof in the Limpopo Province. They knew that the area has some of the most spectacular mountain bike tracks in the country and wanted to show this to the biking community. Their vision also included community service and the promotion of Magoebaskloof as a tourism destination. After some initial discussions with Horst Dombronck of the Magoebaskloof hotel, the wheels were set in motion almost immediately. The Local Rotary, Lions and Round table clubs bought in on the project and so the very famous and popular Mountain bike event got of the ground.
This fundraising event grew from 162 riders in 1999 to almost a 1000 riders in 2003 and proved to be an amazing platform, not only for raising community service funds but also as an awareness drive of Magoebaskloof and surrounding areas as a tourist destination. The responsibilities of organising this event are shared between the tree major local community service organizations, The Rotary Club, The Lions and the Round table.
Starting and finishing at the Magoebaskloof Hotel, the mountain bike challenge consists of two spectacular routes through the Magoebaskloof Mountains, the exhilarating 75km, for the somewhat crazy and a easier 35 km ride for the woosies. Both routes take riders along logging roads, firebreaks, jeep tracks, single track and a bit of portage. All of this through some of the most picturesque scenery South Africa has to offer. Everything from tea plantations, forestry plantations of yellowwood, mahogany, pine, exquisite natural tropical forest to mountain farmlands and trout filled dams.
There are some spectacular down hills and an awesome 23km climb that takes the riders from 800m above msl up to the highest point on the route at 1735m above sml. Although the 75km route is not technically challenging, it is rated BLACK (The hardest category) for the severity of the endurance aspect of the ride. The shorter, less challenging 35km route, rated "RED" cuts out the main downhill and climb and rejoins the route through the mountain farmlands
For the first time the organisers has decided to add a 10km cross-country run and a 10km fun ride as part of the day's activities in 2008. These routes has been carefully designed to allow for the best scenery, riding and running
The Magoebaskloof Classic is without a doubt the best Mountain Bike Event in the Limpopo Province. Our riders have commented on the professionalism and high standard of this race. This is what some of them had to say This has always been my favorite race but remains the hardest single day race in the country. The hills are challenging and the roads narrow suddenly often with obstacles like fallen branches or logs. The magnificent scenery is like nowhere else in the world. This was slickly organised with humorous signboards. This is now the best on the South African calendar

Winner of the 2007 Magoebaskloof Classic.

Just to let you know that we were totally blown away (for the 4th year in a row) by a brilliantly organized race: you have definitely put MTB races into a new category other organisers have so much to learn. WE really enjoyed the whole day from the goodies bags, to the free bike wash and bike park I could go on and on and on. If there was a competition for the best race you would win hands down

This was the greatest and nicest MTB race I have ever done! They say word of mouth is the best advertising and I can assure you that ALL my MTB friends will be joining me next year for the best MTB race in the country. Thanks for organizing a great race! Can't we have a race like this 2 times a year?
